Access blocked sites with your Android

Ever since Malaysia Internet Service Providers (ISPs) been forcefully asked to block access to certain sites on the internet, there had been numerous rants of dissatisfaction amongst the locals. Be it from a wired or wireless internet users (and there still is).

I personally think this violates the freedom of the Internet. However I understand the pressure which has been put to SKMM (which I will elaborate no further here). But being us, creative Malaysian, and with good friends that we have all around the world, such as Anonymous (not that I knew them because they all wear masks!). Here’s a guide on how you can access those blocked websites via your mobile internet, on your Android phones.

It’s simple. And let me show you how…

First, yes of course, the ingredients needed to make this work.

You need SL4A apk, download it from > HERE < and choose sl4a_r4.apk

Next, install it on your Android device. Run it once, and then exit. Download the script file from my dropbox account > HERE < (There is no need to have a dropbox account to download, however, if you want one, please register via my link > HERE < and both of us may get extra space! Sharing is caring ) and save it to /sdcard/sl4a/scripts/

Now that you have the script in place, open SL4A again and you should see ‘change-dns.sh’ listed. Click on it once, and select the second icon (gear).

You should receive 4 requests from SL4a for ROOT access. Allow all of these and the application should end (and appears to do nothing). Exit, open your browser, and try access the sites which was previously blocked…

And there you have it, sites which have been previously blocked are now accessible. How? By changing your DNS. Here’s what inside the script :

su -c "setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8"
su -c "setprop net.dns2 8.8.4.4"

I have defaulted the script to use Google DNS. If you are using something else (eg. OpenDNS), then just change the numbers by editing the script file with any text editor program or with notepad on your PC. Do you have any other DNS to share? Remember, the best is to share, not to keep! 🙂
